Dehumidifiers

Control Excess Moisture Throughout Your Home

Northeast Indiana’s warm, humid weather can leave the air inside your home feeling damp or uncomfortable—even when the air conditioner is running. A whole-home dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the air, helping your HVAC system maintain a more comfortable indoor environment.

Felger Hart Residential provides whole-home dehumidifier installation, replacement, repair, and maintenance throughout Fort Wayne, Bluffton, Wells County, Allen County, and surrounding communities.

Signs of Excess Indoor Humidity

High humidity is not always easy to identify by feel alone. Common signs that your home may need better moisture control include:

  • Air that feels damp, heavy, or clammy
  • Condensation on windows, pipes, or other surfaces
  • Musty odors in living areas, basements, or crawl spaces
  • Damp-feeling rooms even when the air conditioner is operating
  • Moisture collecting around vents or registers
  • Visible humidity readings that remain higher than desired
  • Frequent use or emptying of portable dehumidifiers
  • Difficulty maintaining consistent comfort throughout the home

These conditions can also result from water leaks, drainage problems, or moisture entering through the building. A dehumidifier can control moisture in the air, but it should not be used as a substitute for correcting an active water source.

Whole-Home Versus Portable Dehumidifiers

A portable dehumidifier generally treats one room or limited area and requires a collection container or separate drain hose. A whole-home system provides broader coverage and can be connected to the home’s existing ductwork.

Whole-home dehumidifiers also drain collected water automatically when properly installed, eliminating the need to empty a water bucket regularly. Depending on the home and equipment, the system may operate with the HVAC system or independently when additional moisture removal is needed.

How Does a Whole-Home Dehumidifier Work?

A whole-home dehumidifier draws in humid indoor air and passes it across a cooled coil. Moisture condenses out of the air and drains away, while the drier air is returned to the home.

A built-in control monitors indoor humidity and activates the equipment when moisture rises above the selected setting. This allows the dehumidifier to respond to humidity conditions without requiring the thermostat temperature to be lowered simply to make the home feel less damp.

Dehumidifier Installation and Replacement

Correct sizing and installation are essential for effective moisture control. A system that is not properly selected or connected may run excessively, remove too little moisture, or fail to address the areas where humidity is most noticeable.

Before recommending equipment, Felger Hart Residential considers:

  • The size and layout of your home
  • Current indoor humidity readings
  • Existing HVAC equipment and ductwork
  • Basement or crawl-space conditions
  • Drainage and electrical access
  • Where moisture problems are most noticeable
  • Whether the unit will operate independently or with the HVAC system

We will explain the available options and recommend a system suited to your home rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all solution.

Whole-Home Dehumidifier Repair

If your existing dehumidifier is not keeping humidity under control, our technicians can inspect the system and determine what is affecting its performance.

Schedule service if you notice:

  • The system runs continuously
  • Indoor humidity remains unusually high
  • The dehumidifier does not turn on
  • Water is leaking around the equipment
  • The drain line is clogged or not draining
  • Airflow from the unit has decreased
  • The system makes new or unusual sounds
  • The controls are not responding correctly

We will identify the problem and explain whether repair or replacement offers the better long-term solution.

Dehumidifier Maintenance

Routine maintenance helps a whole-home dehumidifier continue removing moisture and draining properly. Service may include cleaning or replacing the filter, inspecting the coil, clearing the drain line, checking electrical components, and confirming that the controls operate correctly.

Maintenance requirements depend on the equipment, operating conditions, and manufacturer recommendations. Our Preventative Home Maintenance Membership makes it easier to stay current with routine HVAC and plumbing service.
