Zone Control Systems

Customized Temperature Control for Different Areas of Your Home

A single thermostat may not provide consistent comfort throughout a two-story, larger, or uniquely designed home. Rooms with large windows, finished basements, additions, and upper floors can each have different heating and cooling needs.

An HVAC zone control system divides your home into separate temperature zones, allowing you to adjust individual areas without installing a completely separate heating and cooling system for each one.

Felger Hart Residential installs, replaces, repairs, and maintains HVAC zoning systems throughout Fort Wayne, Bluffton, Wells County, Allen County, and surrounding Northeast Indiana communities.

How Does an HVAC Zone Control System Work?

A typical zone control system uses several components to manage airflow throughout the home:

  • Individual thermostats or temperature sensors for each zone
  • Motorized dampers installed inside the ductwork
  • A central control panel connected to the HVAC equipment
  • Compatible heating and cooling controls

When a zone needs heating or cooling, its thermostat sends a signal to the control panel. The system opens or closes the appropriate dampers, directing conditioned air toward the areas that need it.

Depending on the equipment and system design, multiple zones may receive heating or cooling at the same time.

Where Can HVAC Zoning Be Helpful?

Zone control may be worth considering when:

  • The second floor is consistently warmer than the first
  • A finished basement feels cooler than the rest of the house
  • An addition has different comfort needs from the original home
  • Certain rooms receive significant afternoon sunlight
  • Some areas of the home are used less frequently
  • Household members prefer different temperatures
  • One thermostat cannot accurately represent the entire home
  • The home has large, open, or unusually divided living spaces

Zoning can also reduce the need to overheat or overcool one part of the home just to make another area comfortable.

Is Zoning the Right Solution for Uneven Temperatures?

Uneven temperatures do not always mean your home needs a zone control system. Air leaks, damaged ductwork, inadequate insulation, restricted airflow, improperly sized equipment, or an unbalanced duct system can cause similar problems.

Before recommending zoning, Felger Hart Residential can evaluate the existing HVAC system and determine what is contributing to the comfort difference. If another repair or adjustment offers a more practical solution, we will explain those options.

Zone Control System Installation

Successful zoning requires more than adding extra thermostats. The dampers, ductwork, controls, and HVAC equipment must operate together without restricting airflow or placing unnecessary stress on the system.

When designing a zoning solution, our technicians consider:

  • The layout and use of the home
  • Existing furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump
  • Ductwork size and configuration
  • Heating and cooling requirements in each area
  • Equipment staging or variable-speed capabilities
  • Thermostat and control compatibility
  • The number and placement of zones

We will explain how the proposed zones will operate and help you select controls that are practical for your household.

Zone Control System Repair

A problem with a thermostat, damper, sensor, control panel, or electrical connection can prevent a zone from responding correctly.

Contact Felger Hart Residential if:

  • One zone receives little or no airflow
  • Certain rooms become too warm or too cold
  • A thermostat does not respond
  • Dampers remain stuck open or closed
  • The HVAC system cycles more frequently than usual
  • Heating or cooling continues in the wrong zone
  • The control panel displays an error
  • The system no longer maintains the selected temperatures

Our technicians will inspect the zoning components and the connected HVAC equipment to locate the source of the problem.

Zone Control System Maintenance

Zone controls should be checked as part of the home’s overall HVAC maintenance. Service may include testing thermostats and sensors, checking damper operation, inspecting electrical connections, and confirming that the heating and cooling equipment responds correctly to each zone.

Our Preventative Home Maintenance Membership offers a convenient way to stay current with routine HVAC and plumbing maintenance.
